ABOUT THE SPORTS BROADCASTING CAMP with JOHN FANTA

The Nation's Premier Sports Broadcasting Camp!

The Sports Broadcasting Camp, celebrating our 25th anniversary, will open a second location in 2026 as we partner with Cleveland’s own John Fanta for a week at John Carroll University. Fanta, a rising star with NBC Sports, attended St. Ignatius High School. The Sports Broadcasting Camp, founded in 2001, is the nation's longest running sportscasting camp. We will utilize several locations on campus including the multi-camera production studios in the O’Malley Center, WJCU radio facilities and so much more.  The camp is intended for students ages 10-19.

 

Anticipated Hours:

July 20: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. John Carroll University
July 21: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. John Carroll University
July 22: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. John Carroll University
July 23: TBD at Cleveland Guardians/Progressive Field
July 24: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. John Carroll University

Over the last 24 years we have hosted a "who's who" of leading national and local sportscasters and speakers (list below). Our program has the perfect mix of fun, learning and a variety of hands-on experiences, including doing play-by-play of the Cleveland Guardians game against the Minnesota Twins.

Meet The Team

John Fanta Head Set

John Fanta
The Cleveland native and St. Ignatius High School graduate is one of the rising stars in sports broadcasting. He was hired last August by NBC Sports to call BIG EAST, Big Ten and Big 12 college basketball games across Peacock and NBC, along with the NBA. John also contributes to NBC Sports’ college football coverage in the fall, providing game break updates throughout coverage of the Big Ten and Notre Dame. 

John, a graduate of Seton Hall University, previously called men’s and women’s college basketball games for FOX Sports since 2018. He also covered the NBA Draft among other events for NBA Broadcasting since 2023 while also doing select games for CBS Sports Network. He was honored as the Rising Star Award winner by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association in 2024 and was named on The Athletic’s “40 Under 40: Rising Stars in Men’s College Basketball” list.

Camp Director Dave Popkin
Longtime Camp Director Dave Popkin has called games on over a dozen national TV and radio national networks. He is in his 21st year on the Seton Hall Basketball radio team. Additionally, Pop is the Voice of Northeast Conference hoops on CBS Sports Network and SNY, calls select Buffalo Bisons Triple A baseball games on ESPN 1520, college soccer and baseball on FS1, and various sports on ESPN3/ESPN+. He has also been an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University.
